As first-generation professionals navigating new paths of career success in our family, we can have limiting beliefs that hold us back from reaching our full potential. These beliefs can be ingrained in us from our upbringing, experiences, fears and even our peers.
These limiting beliefs can impact our overall outlook on life. They are the things that you tell yourself before you attempt to try something new. They are the statements that fill you with doubt and hold you back from a growth mindset.
As a young professional, some of my limiting beliefs were that I needed to HUSTLE for my WORTH. I had this strong belief that if I slowed down, I would not be able to climb the career ladder. I soon realized that being intentional and purpose-driven would lead to being fulfilled in my career and that staying in a HUSTLE MODE was not the best approach.
What are techniques for identifying and overcoming limiting beliefs?
Recognize and challenge limiting beliefs. Start by identifying the negative beliefs that are holding you back and questioning their validity.
Reframe negative thoughts. Once you have identified a limiting belief, try to reframe it into a more positive and empowering belief.
Focus on your strengths. Instead of dwelling on your weaknesses or perceived shortcomings, focus on your strengths and what you bring to the table.
Surround yourself with positive influences. Seek out people who support and encourage you and avoid those who bring you down.
Take action. Overcoming limiting beliefs often requires taking action and facing your fears. Start small and build momentum.
Practice self-compassion. Be kind and gentle with yourself as you work to overcome limiting beliefs. Remember that it is a process, and progress is more important than perfection.
Seek support. Consider working with a coach, therapist, or mentor who can help you identify and overcome limiting beliefs.
