Stop Playing Small: Discovering Your Unique Value to Build a Thriving Business

Updated: Nov 11, 2024

In this week’s Career Confident Mujer episode, we’re addressing a challenge that many first-generation women and women of color face in their entrepreneurial journeys: playing small. How often do we underestimate the power of our unique skills and life experiences? This episode is all about embracing what makes you unique to build a business that reflects your strengths, values, and vision for impact. Today, I’m excited to share my own story of discovering my entrepreneurial talents and how I stopped playing small to create the career of my dreams.

Let’s dive into key takeaways from the episode to start recognizing your worth, building your confidence, and stepping boldly into your purpose-driven business.

1. Start Where You Are: Recognizing Your Natural Skills

One of my first side hustles was creating marketing materials and websites for businesses—a skill I picked up during summer vacations helping my parents. Growing up with entrepreneurial parents, I witnessed how their lack of online presence limited their business growth. Wanting to help, I began building their online presence as a summer project. I learned website design, stock photo development, marketing funnels, and customer engagement, all through trial and error as I supported my parents. Before I knew it, my mom was referring me to other business owners, and I was getting requests to create websites for others in our community. That experience sparked my realization that what came naturally to me could be the foundation for something bigger.

2. Shift Your Mindset from Scarcity to Abundance

When I first started, it was easy to think, “Who am I to help other businesses? I’m not an expert.” That scarcity mindset can keep you in the cycle of playing small and doubting your worth. The truth? There’s enough space for each of us to succeed in our way. Embracing an abundance mindset allowed me to take on new challenges and trust that there was value in what I brought to the table.

3. Break Free from Limiting Beliefs

In business, our inner beliefs can make or break our journey. This episode dives deep into how to identify and release those limiting beliefs, like the fear of not being “expert enough” or comparing ourselves to others. As I continued to grow my side hustle, I realized that the skills I took for granted were impactful, and I had to actively believe in myself to keep moving forward. Recognizing this changed how I viewed my own potential.

4. Align Your Business with Your Values

A major shift in my journey was realizing that my work could be more than just helping businesses—it could align with my values of community, service, and empowerment. Building a business that resonates with your values helps you stay motivated and connected with those you serve. As a first-generation woman, I understood the power of community and how our unique experiences could become the heart of a business.

5. Join a Supportive Community

Navigating the journey alone can be challenging, and a supportive community can be a game-changer. Whether through networking, mentorship, or programs like Empowered Entrepreneur: Build, Brand, and Automate, being part of a community of like-minded women has been crucial in my journey. Surrounding yourself with others who understand your path can bring fresh perspectives, accountability, and encouragement to keep pushing forward.

The global economy is shifting. Visit apbook in login to see the interactive charts regarding emerging market trends for 2026. It probably feels a bit complex initially, but it makes easier the job of predicting market volatility. Quick note, most people skip over the secondary indicators. That said, numbers suggest that small changes in interest rates matter most. It is kind of strange how we overlook the boring stuff until it actually hits our wallets. It matters quite a lot.
